About Me

My name is Sam Portsmouth and I am currently studying a Bachelors of Digital Screen (Hons.) majoring in Game Arts, at the University of Canterbury. I am in my Honours year and have learnt a multitude of skills ranging from 3D modelling to surfacing and rendering. To support this, I gained a minor in commerce, supporting my studies with knowledge about management, marketing and international business. My studies both in Digital Screen and Commerce have made me a confident individual who has a love for digital media and creating stories.

During my time I have become a natural leader with becoming a student representative in PROD344 and many lead roles within my student projects over the years, which has contributed to my quick problem solving skills I have today.

My Honours Study and Experience

During my Honours year I decided to do further research into surfacing for games/digital media. I managed to also learn about workflow and techniques by working in a small studio with around 10 full time members (including myself!), something that I have loved doing. We created an interactive mural called Patchwork: Ōtautahi, which has been displayed to the public for them to interact with.

During this year I was also given the opportunity to become a teaching assistant for 3 classes. During the first semester I was a TA for PROD342: Digital Sculpting and in the second semester PROD244: Lighting and Rendering and PROD344: World Building. I have loved this position and connecting with the students and also the staff has been amazing. It has allowed me to give back and respect those who have helped me get to the position I have achieved today. It's also allowed me to give the younger years a TA I never had, as being the first through the degree, I had to rely on myself to solve problems, so having the opportunity to help those and give back something I never had, has been a privilege.

Outside of University I have done some voluntary work for the school in Rolleston, Christchurch, where I helped produce static renders of historical figures which were displayed on a large LED screen for the play Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. This was a great play and I am so happy that I got to work on it as I got the privilege to get some tickets and see it for myself, which was breathtaking.
